About John R. Tronrud
John R. Tronrud, born in Iowa, has been an Alaska for over 50 years, working on the Skagway waterfront, helping to shape both his life and the community he calls home. From his early days with White Pass & Yukon Route to his decades with Southeast Stevedoring, John has been part of the hardworking crews that kept freight and passengers moving through Skagway. His dedication to fairness and labor integrity is reflected in more than 30 years of service as a Shop Steward for Teamsters Local 959.
A devoted civic leader, John served nine years as an elected city councilman and as President of the Southeast Conference in 1998. Over the years, he has contributed to numerous local boards and committees—including the Port Committee, Clinic Board, and Economic Development Committee—each appointed by the Mayor. John has also served as a Deacon and Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Skagway and is an member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #431.
Now retired, John wrote his autobiography chronicling five decades of life and work along Alaska’s southeast waterfront. When he’s not working on a project, he and his wife enjoy traveling in their newly outfitted Dodge van, fishing, hiking, and spending time with family.
